Egypt is a unitary presidential republic spanning the northeastern corner of Africa and the Sinai Peninsula in Asia, and it has held a republican government since the 1952 revolution ended a monarchy that had itself only gradually become fully sovereign after decades of British influence. The country's post-revolutionary politics alternated between one-party and dominant-party rule under Gamal Abdel Nasser and his successors, a brief and contested democratic opening after the 2011 uprising that forced Hosni Mubarak from office, and a return to military-backed presidential rule that followed it.

18 June 1953 is the proclamation of the Republic of Egypt, following the Free Officers' coup of 23 July 1952 that overthrew the Kingdom of Egypt's monarchy under King Farouk. It is offered as the founding of the republican government that has held the country since, not as the founding of Egypt as a sovereign state, which this atlas does not compress into one year: Egypt's independence from Britain came gradually, through a unilateral 1922 declaration and a 1936 treaty, with neither changing the governing form from monarchy. This entry follows the same test this atlas applies to China's 1949 and Russia's 1991, the founding of the government presently in place rather than of the country's first sovereignty.
