Ghana is a unitary presidential republic in West Africa and the first sub-Saharan African colony to win independence from European colonial rule, gaining it from the United Kingdom on 6 March 1957 under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah. It has governed itself continuously since, through a period of one-party rule and several periods of military government, returning to multiparty constitutional democracy under its 1992 constitution.
