Pakistan is a federal parliamentary republic in South Asia, its capital Islamabad, in which provincial governments hold a high degree of autonomy. A President serves as head of state while the Prime Minister heads the government, and the bicameral Parliament, made up of the Senate and the National Assembly, holds legislative power. Pakistan is governed under the Constitution of Pakistan, in force since 1973.
