The current Constitution of Mexico, formally the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, was drafted in Santiago de Queretaro during the Mexican Revolution and approved by the Constituent Congress on 5 February 1917, succeeding the Constitution of 1857. It was the first constitution in the world to set out social rights, preceding the Soviet and Weimar constitutions of the following two years, with Articles 3, 27 and 123 establishing free secular education, the basis for land reform and protections for organized labor. Several of its articles also restricted the Catholic Church in Mexico, provisions that were largely repealed in a set of 1992 revisions under President Carlos Salinas de Gortari that also strengthened private property rights.
