The Iranian Revolution overthrew the Pahlavi monarchy of Mohammad Reza Shah between January 1978 and February 1979, when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Tehran on 1 February 1979 after fifteen years in exile. A broad coalition of religious, leftist, and liberal opposition took part in the uprising, but the Islamic Republic established that March consolidated power around Khomeini's own doctrine of velayat-e faqih, and the new state moved quickly against the secular and leftist groups that had joined it against the Shah.
