The Khamenei Supreme Leadership is Iran's ultimate governing authority under Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, an Iranian Shia cleric and politician, in office since the Assembly of Experts unanimously elected him on 8 March 2026 to succeed his father Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated on 28 February 2026 in an Israeli strike during the 2026 Iran war; the Supreme Leader holds final authority over major state matters including foreign and nuclear policy, distinct from the existing Pezeshkian Administration government entity for elected head of government Masoud Pezeshkian, the same dual pattern already minted for Afghanistan (Akhundzada/Hasan Akhund).
