The Federalist Party was the first organized political party in the United States, formed around Alexander Hamilton's supporters in the early 1790s to advocate a strong federal government, a national bank and close commercial ties with Britain, in opposition to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison's Democratic-Republicans. Federalists had earlier campaigned for ratification of the United States Constitution, articulated in the essays collected as The Federalist Papers. The party held the presidency under George Washington and John Adams, but declined after 1800 and had effectively dissolved by the 1820s.
