The International Monetary Fund is the institution the 1944 Bretton Woods Conference created to oversee the postwar system of fixed exchange rates centered on the US dollar and gold and to provide short-term financial assistance to member countries facing balance-of-payments difficulties. It began operating in 1945 alongside the World Bank as one of the two Bretton Woods institutions.
