The Labour Party formed in 1900 as the Labour Representation Committee, an alliance of trade unions and socialist societies seeking direct parliamentary representation for working people, and adopted its current name in 1906. Ramsay MacDonald led the first Labour government in 1924. Since the mid twentieth century it has stood, with the Conservative Party, as one of the two dominant parties in British politics, generally favoring an active state role in the economy and the provision of social services, including the creation of the National Health Service under Clement Attlee's postwar government.
