Immigration policy is the body of law and administrative practice a state uses to decide who may enter, remain in and eventually gain permanent status or citizenship within its territory, and under what conditions. Approaches vary widely between states, from points-based systems that prioritize applicants' skills or capital to family-reunification, asylum and labor-migration channels operated alongside one another, and most states blend several of these channels rather than relying on one. This atlas records immigration policy as a governing mechanism and arrangement, describing how such regimes work rather than arguing for any particular level or kind of immigration.
