Abelardo Gabriel de la Espriella Otero serves as Colombia's 36th president, having taken office on 7 August 2026. A lawyer and businessman, he founded the far-right Defenders of the Homeland party in 2024 after gaining prominence defending high-profile clients including politicians with alleged paramilitary ties and Venezuelan businessman Alex Saab, and won the 2026 election with the smallest margin of victory in Colombian presidential history, taking 49.66 percent of the runoff vote against senator Ivan Cepeda.
