Andrei Sakharov was a Soviet physicist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, awarded the prize in 1975 for emphasizing human rights around the world. He worked in the Soviet nuclear weapons program before becoming known for political activism for individual freedom, human rights and civil liberties in the Soviet Union, for which he was treated as a dissident and faced persecution from the Soviet establishment.
