Burmese politician, daughter of independence leader Aung San, who led a decades long nonviolent struggle against military rule in Myanmar and won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize while under house arrest, where she spent roughly fifteen of the twenty one years between 1989 and 2010. Her party, the National League for Democracy, won power in 2015 and she governed as State Counsellor, a role created because a constitutional clause barred her from the presidency. Her government drew international condemnation for its response to the 2017 military campaign against the Rohingya minority, which she did not publicly denounce and which UN investigators later described as bearing genocidal intent. She was herself overthrown by a military coup in February 2021.
The extent of Aung San Suu Kyi's personal culpability for the 2017 Rohingya crackdown remains debated: supporters point to the military's constitutionally guaranteed independence from her civilian government, critics point to her public defence of the military at the International Court of Justice in 2019.
