Irish-born British statesman and writer whose Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790) warned that the Revolution's rejection of inherited institutions and tradition would end in terror and dictatorship. He argued that political change should proceed gradually and organically, respecting institutions built up over generations, and is widely regarded as the founding theorist of modern conservatism. He died in 1797.
