Emiliano Zapata (1879 to 1919) was a leader of the Mexican Revolution in the southern state of Morelos. His 1911 Plan de Ayala demanded the return of village land seized under the Porfiriato and threatened confiscation of haciendas that refused to comply, an influential articulation of the modern demand for land reform later codified in Article 27 of Mexico's 1917 constitution.
