Felipe VI became King of Spain on 19 June 2014 following the abdication of his father Juan Carlos I. Born in Madrid during Francisco Franco's dictatorship, he was proclaimed Prince of Asturias in 1977 and formally sworn in as heir in 1986, and his reign has included the 2017 Catalan independence referendum crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and efforts to modernize and increase transparency in the Spanish monarchy.
