Frank-Walter Steinmeier has served as President of Germany since 19 March 2017. He earlier served as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2009 and again from 2013 to 2017, and as Vice-Chancellor of Germany from 2007 to 2009, having been a principal architect of the Agenda 2010 welfare reforms as chief of staff under Chancellor Gerhard Schroder and later led the SPD's parliamentary opposition from 2009 to 2013.
