German-born American political theorist whose The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951) analysed the shared mechanisms of Nazi and Stalinist rule. She later wrote Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963), introducing the phrase the banality of evil to describe how ordinary bureaucratic participation could enable atrocity. She died in 1975.
