Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva served as the 35th President of Brazil from 2003 to 2011 and returned as the 39th President beginning 1 January 2023. Before his presidency he was a prominent trade unionist and metalworker who led major labor strikes during Brazil's military dictatorship in the late 1970s and helped found the Workers' Party in 1980. He ran unsuccessfully for president three times before his first victory in 2002, and defeated incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in 2022 to win his third term.
