Mahmoud Abbas, also known by the kunya Abu Mazen, was born 15 November 1935 in Safed, then in Mandatory Palestine, and is a Palestinian politician who has served as President of the Palestinian National Authority since 15 January 2005. His family fled to Syria during the 1948 Palestine war; he studied law at Damascus University and later earned a doctoral degree from what was then Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow. Abbas joined Fatah in 1961 and became one of its senior leaders, serving as the first Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority from March to September 2003 before his election as president in January 2005. He has represented the Palestinian side in numerous rounds of negotiation with Israel.
