Marcus Garvey was a Jamaican political activist who founded and served as first President-General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League, through which he declared himself Provisional President of Africa. A black nationalist and Pan-Africanist whose ideas are known as Garveyism, he founded the People's Political Party in Jamaica in 1929 and was convicted of mail fraud in the United States in 1923; his ideas later influenced movements including Rastafari and the Nation of Islam.
