Michel Aflaq (1910 to 1989) was a Syrian philosopher and political theorist who co-founded the Ba'ath Party in Damascus in 1943 with Salah al-Din Bitar. His writing fused pan-Arab nationalism with a socialist critique of colonialism and of the traditional elites who had governed under it, supplying pan-Arabism's most influential intellectual formulation, though rival Ba'athist governments in Syria and Iraq later marginalized him.
