Russian revolutionary and leading theorist of collectivist anarchism, who held that all forms of state authority, not only capitalist economic relations, must be abolished. His dispute with Karl Marx over the role of the state split the First International; he and his followers were expelled at its 1872 Hague Congress. He died in 1876.
