Last leader of the Soviet Union, serving as General Secretary of the Communist Party from 1985 to 1991 and as Soviet president in 1990 and 1991. He introduced glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring), expanding freedom of expression and beginning the democratisation of the Soviet political system, and pursued arms reduction with the West. His reforms contributed to the end of Soviet control over Eastern Europe and to the dissolution of the Soviet Union itself in 1991; he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. He died in 2022.
