Patrice Lumumba was a Congolese politician, independence leader and revolutionary who served as the first Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, from June to September 1960, following his party's success in the May 1960 election. He led the Congolese National Movement from 1958 until his assassination in January 1961, and played a significant role in the transformation of the Congo from a Belgian colony into an independent republic.
