French journalist and the first person to call himself an anarchist, whose 1840 What Is Property? answered its own title question, theft, condemning rent and interest as unearned income while defending property held and worked by its own possessor, the mutualist position that split later anarchists from the collectivist and communist currents Bakunin and Kropotkin represented. He died in 1865.
