Toussaint Louverture was a Haitian general and the most prominent leader of the Haitian Revolution. Born into slavery in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, he became Governor-General-for-life of Saint-Domingue after allying successively with Spanish and then Republican French forces, before fighting against Napoleon Bonaparte's troops; he is remembered as one of the founders of Haiti.
