Vigdis Finnbogadottir is an Icelandic stateswoman and theatre director who served as the fourth President of Iceland from 1980 to 1996. She was the first woman to hold the office and the first woman in the world to be democratically elected president of a country, and, having served sixteen years, was the longest-serving elected female head of state in history.
