Vladimir Putin has served as President of Russia since 2012, after an earlier presidency from 2000 to 2008 and a term as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2012. He worked for 16 years as a KGB foreign intelligence officer, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel, before rising through Saint Petersburg politics in the 1990s and moving to Moscow in 1996, where he held security and administrative posts under President Boris Yeltsin.
