Xi Jinping has served as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and Chairman of its Central Military Commission since 2012, and as President of China since 2013, making him the country's paramount leader. He earlier served as governor and party secretary of Zhejiang province from 2002 to 2007 and briefly as Shanghai party secretary in 2007, before being appointed vice president in 2008 and vice chairman of the Central Military Commission in 2010, and succeeded Hu Jintao as paramount leader in 2012.
