Civil Rights and Suffrage Movements

Movements campaigning to extend legal rights, the franchise or equal treatment to a group excluded from them within an existing state, including the Abolitionist Movement, the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, the Women's Suffrage Movement in the United Kingdom, the Anti-Apartheid Movement, Chartism and the Levellers. Belongs here: a movement whose central aim is extending a right, a vote or equal legal standing to a group within an existing political order, rather than replacing that order or seceding from it. Does not belong here: a movement seeking independence from external rule, grouped under Independence and Anti-Colonial Movements, or one organized primarily around labor and workplace conditions, grouped under Labor Movements.
