Japan is a constitutional monarchy in East Asia, governed since 1947 under a parliamentary system in which an elected legislature holds governing authority and the emperor's role is purely ceremonial. The current constitutional order replaced the Meiji Constitution of 1889, an earlier and structurally different constitutional monarchy in which sovereignty rested in the emperor rather than the people, and postwar Japanese politics have been dominated for most of the period since by the Liberal Democratic Party.
