The Liberal Democratic Party formed in November 1955 through the merger of the Liberal Party and the Japan Democratic Party, and has governed Japan for nearly all of the period since, with brief interruptions in 1993 to 1994 and 2009 to 2012. The party oversaw Japan's postwar economic recovery and rise to become a major economic power, generally working closely with business interests and pursuing a foreign policy aligned with the United States.
