The Kuomintang, the Chinese Nationalist Party, was founded on 25 August 1912 in Guangdong by Sun Yat-sen and Song Jiaoren from a coalition of revolutionary groups formed after the Xinhai Revolution. After Sun's death in 1925, Chiang Kai-shek became its leader and used it to found the Nationalist government of the Republic of China in 1928. It fought and lost the Chinese Civil War to the Chinese Communist Party in 1949 and continued afterward as the ruling, then leading opposition, party of Taiwan.
