A reigning or historical monarch who holds or held a country's headship by hereditary right rather than election, appointment or force. Belongs here: a current reigning monarch such as Charles III, Felipe VI, Naruhito and Vajiralongkorn, and a historical monarch such as King John of England. Does not belong here: an elected head of state in a constitutional monarchy's parliamentary government, filed under Heads of State and Government, since that person holds executive authority by election rather than heredity even though the monarchy itself continues.
