Civil Rights, Suffrage and Dissident Leaders

A person whose primary and lasting significance is organizing or embodying a rights, suffrage or pro democracy movement, or open dissent against a ruling government, rather than holding top state office, even where that person later assumed office as a direct result of the same struggle. Belongs here: a suffrage or civil rights organizer such as Emmeline Pankhurst, Mary Wollstonecraft, Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, a Soviet or post Soviet dissident such as Andrei Sakharov and Alexei Navalny, and a dissident who later became head of state as a direct continuation of the same movement, such as Vaclav Havel, Lech Walesa and Aung San Suu Kyi, filed here rather than under Heads of State and Government for consistency with how this tree treats movement leadership as the defining role. Tarique Rahman and Imran Khan are filed here on the same reasoning, as opposition figures cast against the governments that preceded or opposed them; both are disclosed, lower confidence placements given the two men's continuing and contested political trajectories. Does not belong here: a person whose movement was chiefly against colonial or imperial rule rather than against a government of their own country, filed under Revolutionary and Independence Leaders instead.
