A person whose primary and lasting historical significance is leading an armed, popular or organized movement against colonial rule, imperial rule or an existing political order, whether or not that person went on to hold ordinary office afterward. This bucket is defined by the movement a person led, not by whether that movement succeeded quickly or by how the government it produced later turned out, so a founding leader whose later government grew authoritarian, such as Robert Mugabe, is filed here rather than under Military, Coup and Transitional Rulers, for consistency with how this tree treats the whole founding generation of independence leaders, Kenneth Kaunda among them. Belongs here: an independence movement leader such as Mahatma Gandhi, Simon Bolivar, Kwame Nkrumah, Sukarno, Ho Chi Minh, Jomo Kenyatta and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and a revolutionary who overturned an existing domestic order rather than colonial rule, such as Vladimir Lenin, Fidel Castro and Ruhollah Khomeini, whose Iranian Revolution is the defining act this entity is filed for even though he also became the first Supreme Leader of the theocracy it founded; his office successors who did not themselves lead that founding revolution are filed under Theocratic and Religious-Political Leaders instead. Marcus Garvey, Morvan Marchal and David Lane are filed here as a disclosed, lower confidence placement: the nearest fit among this tree's buckets for leaders of nationalist or pan-nationalist movements that fall short of a full national independence struggle (Pan-Africanism, Breton regionalism), for entities this wave did not have a dedicated bucket for and, for David Lane, did not independently reconfirm the identity behind the entity within this pass's budget; a successor with more research time may find a more precise fit. Does not belong here: a person who reached the same kind of top office through the country's ordinary constitutional or party process rather than by leading a movement against it, filed under Heads of State and Government, and a person who took power through a coup by a standing military rather than a mass independence or revolutionary movement, such as Augusto Pinochet and Joseph Stalin, filed under Military, Coup and Transitional Rulers instead.
